Shelly Baker
Shelly Baker - 2024 NLC Houston Fellow
Shelly Baker (she/her) is an organizer with a passion for youth advocacy. Shelly serves as the Texas Organizing Director for NextGen America, where she empowers youth through voter education and mobilization. Shelly’s passion for youth advocacy stems from her personal experience of aging out of the foster care system. Prior to moving to Houston in 2019, Shelly served on SPEAKOUT, a state board in Virginia to advise on foster care policy. Shelly supports local efforts to engage youth by serving on the board of Houston’s League of Women Voters and as the Voter Engagement Advisor for the Mayor’s Youth Council. She received her Bachelors in Sociology from the University of Virginia and earned her Master's in Social Work from Virginia Commonwealth University. Originally from New Orleans, Shelly enjoys rollerskating and currently resides in Southeast Houston with her dog, Fancy, and cat, Pippa.
