She/Her

Coordinator for Leadership, University of Maryland Baltimore County

Beatriz Gutiérrez-Malagón, a native of Hialeah, FL, graduated from Florida State University in 2016 as a first-generation Latina with a Bachelor of Science in Criminology, International Affairs, and a Leadership Studies certificate. After a gap-year, she returned to her alma mater and pursued a Master’s degree in Higher Education Student Affairs— which she obtained in 2019. In her time at Florida State, Beatriz studied abroad in Israel where she completed a Direct Individual Study on Human Trafficking, served as an Outreach Facilitator for three community agencies in Tallahassee, became a Community Ambassador for Capital City Youth Services which provides resources to youth experiencing homelessness, and was an active member of her campus Greek life serving as the President and Community Service Chairwoman of Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha, Inc. Before graduating with her Bachelors, she was inducted into Florida State’s Greek Hall of Fame, CARE Hall of Fame, and received the J.R. Harding Award and Chapter President of the Year Award. During graduate school her experiences included creating and facilitating on-campus leadership programming, advocating for Womxn’s health as a keynote speaker for the annual Ladies Legacy Banquet, and being inducted into the Seminole Torchbearers organization for carrying on the legacy of leadership at Florida State’s campus. For most of her college years, including graduate school, Beatriz worked at the Center for Leadership & Social Change; where she discovered her passion for service learning, leadership development and social justice advocacy. During her gap-year, she was dedicated to a year of combating poverty in North Florida as an AmeriCorps VISTA working for a local non-profit called Impact America. Because of her strong commitment to the North Florida community, Beatriz was recognized as one of Tallahassee’s 25 Women to Know in 2017. After receiving her Master’s degree, Beatriz moved from her home state to Maryland— where she kicked-off her career in student affairs as Coordinator for Leadership at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). At UMBC she also serves as a Student Government Association (SGA) Senate Advisor, and is the Circle Advisor for the leadership honor society Omicron Delta Kappa. On her time off, she likes to hang out with her high school sweetheart/husband, their gerberian shepskies (#TitusTheBandit #AppaTheShepsky) and their cats (#NuggetTheTabby #GeorgeTheTuxedoKitty). Today, Beatriz hopes and strives to make Maryland home by doing what she does best: going out into the community and serving as an agent of change.
